When Wausau Paper Mills Co. Jay ME suffered repeated failures of the original bronze bearings furnished with the equipment, the maintenance staff switched to graphite-metal alloy bearings. The move was made to GRAPHALLOY self-lubricating bushings designed specifically to withstand the intermittent dry-run conditions of the paper mill's stock tank agitators, where varying stock levels sometimes eliminate all lubrication.
The mill uses 15 pulp stock agitators to produce manufacturing papers and labels. Each unit has a horizontal shaft driving a 54 inch, 4 blade shockless propeller made of stainless steel. The original bushings were made of bronze and had graphite plugs that were expected to provide self lubricating properties.
One of the GRAPHALLOY Bushings was installed in January 1996. During the plant's July shut down, this bushing was inspected and showed no wear. At the January 1997 inspection, again the bushing showed no wear. In February 1997, eight additional GRAPHALLOY bushings were ordered and the new bushings were installed on all remaining agitators. As of January 1998, the bushings were still operating well and no measurable wear was apparent on those installed 18 and 24 months prior.
Mill management expects to save at least $40,000 per year by reducing purchases of replacement parts and the labor required for replacement of the previous bushings. Additional benefits are expected by freeing up maintenance staff who previously spent a significant portion of their time addressing the agitator problems

Split Double Flange Bushings:

As with all GRAPHALLOY bushings, these split double flanged bushings will survive harsh environments. They are commonly used in screw or spiral conveyors or feeders to move a large variety of bulk materials. They are also used in batch mixers and in agitators. Steel Mill Cooling Beds A tough, hot and dusty application

Think you have a tough, "rough service" application?

Consider this example from a Midwest steel mill.

As molten hot plates, bars and billets come off casters, they move on horizontal rollers typically supported by water cooled bearings. This particular mill was already using GRAPHALLOY bushings for the horizontal rollers in their cooling beds, and the bushings were thriving under these severe heat and water spray conditions.

Because of the success with the horizontal rollers, the mill wanted to consider GRAPHALLOY flange bearings for another application: the vertical guide rollers along the sides of the cooling beds.

These vertical guides keep the hot steel from running off the sides of the cooling beds. Guide rollers remain static until a piece of hot steel slams up against them, at which time they are expected to turn instantly to guide the steel back onto the cooling bed.

This mill had been using conventional greased rolling element bearings in the vertical guides, but these bearings usually lasted only a few months.

When considering the GRAPHALLOY flange unit upgrade, the customer was concerned about shock loading and flange breakage. Fortunately, neither of these turned out to be a problem. Based on the success with the vertical rollers, the mill has since retro-fitted additional lines with GRAPHALLOY.

This is an excellent example of how GRAPHALLOY can solve bearing problems under harsh and difficult operating environment.

Damper bearings in the power house have always caused maintenance problems due to heat and poor lubrication practices. Changing to dry GRAPHALLOY material eliminates the need for any lubricant which would burn off, gum up or harden at these higher temperatures. At one installation, the upgrade to GRAPHALLOY flange blocks resulted in maintenance free operation for more than seven years.

The horizontal reactor shaft bushing supports the circulating impeller and internal mechanical seal in this continuous duty application. Although the combination of a low lubricity sealing fluid, intermittent slugs of concentrated sulfuric acid and high bearing load creates a trouble some environment for other bearing materials, self-lubricating graphalloy will provide superior performance. It resists the acid chemical attack. It does not deform under load and maintains a close running clearance. At one installation the graphalloy bushing had only .003" wear after four years of operation.

Product Details:

The interior temperature of an annealing furnace is in the range of 1200F. Even though bearings supporting the pinch rolls are outside the walls, they still reach temperatures up to 7500F and yet must be able to compensate for shaft expansion from cold startup to production temperature levels. Rigid, grease lubricated rolling element bearings could not meet these conditions, so the operators specified GRAPHALLOY journal sleeve bushings sized for installation in a special metal shell and inserted into the existing housing. Since 1990 the design has been operating successfully in this tortuous environment.
